PREVIEW: THE OWL ALWAYS HUNTS AT NIGHT by Samuel Bjørk
THE OWL ALWAYS HUNT AT NIGHT by Samuel Bjørk
Publisher: RandomHouse Australia
That northern Europe was fertile ground for writers and thriller novel we knew well. And is from Norway that comes one of the most talented and shocking thriller authors that I have ever read. Samuel Bjørk, pseudonym of the versatile Norwegian artist Frode Sander Øien, continues the series of the special unit of Oslo led by Holger Munch and his talented team of chosen elements, struggling again with a vicious serial killer. "THE OWL ALWAYS HUNT AT NIGHT" follow the first book of Olger Munch & Mia Kruger series called " I'M TRAVELLING ALONE " that I reviewed here.
This book will be published in Australia by Doubleday, an Imprint of Random House AU on the 15 of August 2016 ( Dec 2016 in the USA) . The cover that you see in the photograph above is the Italian version of the book. The one on the right, will be the Australia cover.
Back into the woods with another cruel murder, Holger Munch is facing a new and unique level of brutality. In a clearing, in a field of heather in bloom the naked and skeletal corpse of a teenage girl was found lying on a bed of feathers and surrounded by candles arranged to form a pentagram, a five-pointed star that reminds macabre pagan rituals ...
Feathers, candles, a wig, the strange position of the arms and a tattoo: a horse's head under the letters A and F. These are the pictures that Munch projected in front of his team again reunited. A team of special elements, such as special is this new case. And once again to miss the call is Mia Kruger, that despite the brilliant resolution of the previous episode told in I'M TRAVELLING ALONE, was again removed from the group because considered unreliable.
My "moonbeam", the nickname Mia's grandmother give her when she was a little girl.
You are special Mia, you know? Mia, you know things they do not know, see things that others do not see ...
Considereda "unstable subject " and out of the team until she finished the psychologist therapy, Mia is fighting again those damn memories that are devouring her from the inside. Go to the pshycologist? Hell, she tried! But the lure of Sigrid, her dead sister, is too strong now that she is alone ... "Come, Mia, come." Once again Holger Munch will save Mia from the chasm of depression and from the mysery of her condition. Begging her to come back, he knows that she is the only one able to interpret the circumstances that led the victim into the woods. At the cost of antagonizing his superiors, Mia is recalled back in to the team.
I thought I had already read the top thriller with the previous novel, and instead almost 300 pages are literally vanished into a story that left me , if possible, even more shocked. The strenght of this new book by Bjørk is probably the alternate of personal episodes of Munchand the whole team lifes, providing the reader with the access to a more intimate and engaging part of the story. The discovery of this body will leadinvestigations in to a world of"difficult" and "special" boys, in the dark recesses of the web and also, in the world of big pharma and the war that animal rights groups are fighting against these multinationals. In this new , powerfull and thoughs-provoking, thriller the world of sects, will make an appearence. The religious fanaticism that puts fear eche with their secret existence and macabre rituals, will wire the entire team a hard time in the resolution of the investigation.
I love thrillers and this one has mermerized me at a point that I was unable to stop reading, even when the pages were hard to swallow because of the strong content. This is the strength of Samuel Bjørk: his books do not let you a way out.
What else can I say?... chapeau!
